The MetroFibre Team 06 Jul 2026 Share on ![](https://blog.metrofibre.co.za/hubfs/Screenshot%202025-08-12%20at%2008.20.33.png) Share on Reading Time: 2 minutes  Let's be honest – "smart home" sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie. Voice-controlled lights, cameras that talk back, a house that basically runs itself. Good news? It's way more doable than it sounds. Even better news? If you've got high-speed fibre internet access like we provide, you're already halfway there. Here's how to get started, without overwhelming your budget or your brain. **What Is a Smart Home, Really?** Simple version: a smart home uses internet-connected devices so you can control things like lighting, temperature, security, and appliances from your phone or using your voice. Fibre is the nervous system that keeps it all talking to each other smoothly. **Why Your Wi-Fi Actually Matters** You might be wondering why your connection matters for a light bulb. Here's why: - Stable, symmetrical speeds keep instructions moving in both directions. - Low latency means "lights off" actually means lights off – not a three-second delay. - More devices mean more competition for bandwidth. A shaky connection means glitchy devices and "sorry, can't reach that right now" messages. A stable one just works. **Easy, Low-Cost Entry Points** - **Smart plugs (from ~R200):** Control any regular appliance from your phone. Great for thigns like lamps and heaters, - **Smart bulbs (R150–R500):** Dim without a dimmer, change colours, or schedule lights for sunset security. - **Smart speakers/displays (R800–R2,500):** The command centre – voice control, timers, music, news updates. - **Video doorbells (R1,500–R4,000):** See who's at your door and speak to visitors from anywhere, with footage recorded for an extra layer of security when you're not home. **A Few Tips Before You Dive In** ✔ Start small – one or two devices is plenty. ✔ Stick to one ecosystem – mixing brands can cause headaches. ✔ Secure your network – use a strong password and be sure to update firmware when available. **Ready to Get Smart?** Start with one small device if you’re interested – whatever feels least intimidating. Before you know it, you'll be dimming lights from the couch and wondering how you ever lived without it. And with an **Uncapped. Unlimited. Unbeatable. Super fast fibre internet** connection to run your devices from, you've got the reliable foundation to build on. No drama, no dead spots, no "why isn't this working" moments. ##### Share this post ##### Residential ### Stay in touch with us We hate spam, just as much as you do.
