Mandela Day: How Connectivity Changes Lives

Reading Time: 2.5 minutes

Every year on 18 July, South Africans are encouraged to give at least 67 minutes to others - one minute for every year Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice.

Herea at MetroFibre, connection is what we do. So, this Mandela Day, we're thinking about a different kind of connection: the one between opportunity and access.

The Digital Divide Is Real

Some households have seamless fibre internet access, while any communities still don't have basic internet access at all. In 2026, that gap touches almost everything:

  • Education – no connectivity means no online resources, no submitting assignments digitally, no building digital skills.
  • Employment – many job applications and remote work opportunities depend on internet access.
  • Healthcare – access to medical information and virtual health resources need a stable internet connect.
  • Economic participation – from banking to buying, the digital economy runs through high-speed internet access.

Being disconnected isn't just inconvenient. It's a barrier to taking part in society.

What Madiba Might Say About the Internet

Mandela once said education is the most powerful weapon we have to change the world. Today, education and internet access are hard to separate. A connected person or home can study online, learn to code, and access career opportunities they'd never otherwise know existed. A person without connectivity misses all of it.

We believe Madiba would see digital access as part of the freedom and opportunity he spent his life fighting for.

Your 67 Minutes for Digital Good

Small, simple ways to help close the gap:

  • Donate old devices. That spare tablet or laptop could change someone’s future. Computers for Kids, SchoolNet South Africa, and Hello Tutor all refurbish and redistribute devices.
  • Teach a digital skill. Show a neighbour how to video call family, or help a job seeker set up an email account.
  • Support connectivity initiatives. Donate to or volunteer with organisations working on digital inclusion.
  • Mentor remotely. Your connection can help guide someone through career or business decisions, wherever they are.

What We're Doing

Every previously unconnected household we enable with access to the opportunities the digital world provides. We're proud to support initiatives that bring connectivity and digital skills to underserved communities - because when more people are connected, everyone benefits.

This Mandela Day

Donate a device. Teach a skill. Share your Wi-Fi. Or just take a moment to notice the access you have. In today's world, connection is opportunity.

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead." – Nelson Mandela
